Meditation Mondays: Examine Thyself And Go To Christ
40 Let us test and examine our ways,
and return to the Lord!
41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands
to God in heaven:
42 “We have transgressed and rebelled,
and you have not forgiven. (Lamentations 3:40-42 ESV)
Meditation:
How often do you sit still and ponder the state of your spiritual health? When is the last time you've considered your ways?
Every thought, every action, every omission does something to you. It hardens or softens your soul toward the Lord. Jeremiah calls for his nation to cease moving. He tells them to cease weeping and mourning and consider their unholy ways before God. A careful consideration of your life will reveal that you have transgressed against God and others. You have rebelled against God's Law. You have loved His good gifts to you even more than Him. You are guilty. I am guilty.
A very good, practical exercise would be to journal out your guilt before the Lord. Get as specific as you can. I'm not asking you to be morbid. I'm asking you to examine yourself before our Triune God. Then, as Jeremiah and his fellow nation did, lift your hearts and hands to God in heaven. For He has provided forgiveness for our trespasses. And He has done so comprehensively. God has provided Christ Jesus. Jesus took on every specific, vulgar sin you've ever committed and God poured out His wrath for your sin on Jesus. So believer, as you examine yourself, allow it to lead you to worship our Triune God who's saved you completely.
