Jonathan Edwards and Resolutions (8): Humble Yourselves
8. Resolved, to act, in all respects, both speaking and doing, as if nobody had been so vile as I, and as if I had committed the same sins, or had the same infirmities or failings as others; and that I will let the knowledge of their failings promote nothing but shame in myself, and prove only an occasion of my confessing my own sins and misery to God.
Today Edwards speaks of humility and how it drives our character and love for others. God help us when we believe the lie that the sins of others are worse than our own. Paul speaking to Timothy calls himself the chief of sinner (the first place sinner: 1 Timothy 1:15). Believer, on your best day it is profitable for you to think of yourself as the second worst sinner whose ever lived. This will foster a grateful attitude toward God in the gospel, and it will help you to love and serve others with humility. You will be gentler, kinder, more respectful and we desperately need this in our culture. Spend some time today reflecting on your own sin and remember to look to Christ, thank Him for His forgiveness and extend mercy to others. Our world needs more of this.
