Jonathan Edwards and Resolutions (19): Be Productive Because Jesus is Coming

Resolution 19:

19. Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if I expected it would not be above an hour, before I should hear the last trump.

Commentary:

Live as if Jesus is coming back today. He indeed could come back today. Listen to the words of Jesus in Matthew 24:42-44:

42 "Watch therefore, for you do not know what [b]hour your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what[c]hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." (NKJV)

Edwards aimed to live his life as if Jesus could return at any moment. If you are a faithful reader of this blog, you know by now that Edwards was quite productive. Edwards was productive because He was laboring for the return of his King. Edwards was employed by the Savior to announce His coming-His universal Lordship to the ends of the earth. And Edwards did this faithfully with the unique talents and gifts bestowed on him by God.

Think about your employments today. Think about your gifts, your talents, your responsibilities, your vocation. Are you working in such a way that demonstrates you believe Jesus will return at any moment? If not, ask yourself the question today: What do I hope my Savior finds me doing when He returns? Based on the answer to that question, begin doing that very thing. Don't waste another moment. Live and labor hard dear believer, Jesus is coming.
